VS Sampath, one of the Election Commissioners of Election Commission of India, is a 1973-batch IAS officer of the Andhra Pradesh cadre. He took charge as Election Commissioner on 21 April, 2009 after serving for a year as the Secretary, Energy and Power, Government of India. On 6 June 2012, V.S.Sampath was appointed as the new Chief Election Commissioner until 2014.
He has a distinguished record in public service, having served in several capacities both in Andhra Pradesh and in the Govt. of India. As Principal Secretary Power, Govt. of Andhra Pradesh, he worked on the power sector reforms and unbundling of the power sector in the state. He was then Finance Secretary of Andhra Pradesh. He has worked as Addl. Secretary in the Ministry of Rural Development, and then as Secretary Chemicals and Secretary Power, Govt. of India.
