Some Useful Information about Eyes You Should Know

Eyes are the most precious part of our body. They are our gateway to the outside world, this beautiful planet that we live in, its flora and fauna, the stars, the moon and the light. It is through our eyes that we grasp the first feelings of how things look around us. We may touch things, sense things but without the power to actually see them, the real feel of them is incomplete. So we must take good care of our eyes and protect them from any harmful effects. They are the greatest gift of nature and we must do everything possible to preserve them.

Now moving on to some interesting facts and information related to our eyes, we should know that,

Eyes are the most complex body organs that we possess except for the brain, and they are composed of more than two million working parts. Moreover, eyes can process 36,000 bits of information every hour i.e. a speed of 10 bits per second. Under the right conditions, they can discern the light of a candle at a distance of 14 miles. Coming to the knowledge that we gain throughout our lives, eyes contribute towards 85% of your total knowledge. They utilize 65% of all the pathways to the brain, so we can imagine the reason for their amazingly high efficiency in transmitting and receiving signals from the brain. Also, eyes can instantaneously set in motion hundreds of muscles and organs in your body, so it is not just the brain that they have control over, but the rest of the body too.

In a normal life-span, the eyes will bring you almost 24 million images of the world around you (imagine looking out for that many number of images on the internet, and then storing them in your local hard disk, all this and more is given to us by our eyes for free!).

he external muscles that move the eyes are the strongest muscles in the human body for the job that they have to do. They are 100 times more powerful than they need to be. Now that is nature’s way of telling us the importance of this particular organ in our body, and the amount of resources that go into maintaining its working.

The adult eyeball measures about 1 inch (2.5 cm) in diameter. Out of its total surface area, only one-sixth is exposed i.e. the front portion, the remaining part forming the rear portion of the eye is involved in the image processing work based on the input received by the frontal portion.

The eye is the only part of the human body that can function at 100% ability at any moment, day or night, without rest. Your eyelids need rest, the external muscles of your eyes need rest, the lubrication of your eyes requires replenishment, but your eyes themselves “never” need rest. But this doesn’t mean that you take undue advantage of the fact, because the external muscles and the lubrication of the eyes are the main driving force behind this organ that gives us the sense of vision. So if you want to persist it for long, please rest your eyes!

Eyes are your most precious sense. Care for them properly!
