When Sir Syed founded the college, the need was acute among Indian Muslims for modern education. Among the first institutions to come up during the Raj, this school marked a watershed in the educational and social history of Muslims in the subcontinent. In the early 20s, this institution exploded into political activity and became the centre of the Pakistan Movement under Mohammed Ali Jinnah.
